Why plantings fail here

It is almost always the soil, not the plant.

Dig a hole in clay, drop in a nursery plant with its light potting mix, and backfill around it, and you have built a bucket that fills with water and does not drain.

Ypsilanti has some of the oldest housing stock in the county on some of the smallest lots. Mature trees, narrow drives, and a lot of properties where the useful outdoor space is a compact back yard.

Small does not mean simple. A tight lot with a hundred-year-old maple, a detached garage and a shared drive gives you less room for error than an acre does. Getting equipment in, staging material and putting the water somewhere legitimate all take more planning, not less.

The plant drowns slowly over two seasons and everyone blames the plant. The fix is unglamorous: break the sides of the hole, amend a wide area rather than a narrow one, set the crown slightly high, and choose species that tolerate wet feet where the ground stays wet.

  • Beds amended wide, not just the planting hole, so roots can leave the clay.
  • Crowns set slightly high so water moves away from the stem instead of pooling.
  • Species matched to the spot wet, dry, deep shade or full afternoon sun.
  • Edges cut and defined so beds hold their shape without plastic edging.

Working a hundred-year-old lot

A Depot Town or Normal Park back yard is often thirty feet wide with a century-old maple in the middle of it and a shared drive down one side. There is no staging area, no machine access and no margin.

That changes the design honestly. Fewer, better-chosen plants beat a crowded bed, vertical structure does more than spread does, and hard edges matter more because everything is seen from close up.

Old trees also mean old roots. Cutting a bed into the root plate of a mature maple damages a tree worth far more than the planting, so beds here get built up rather than dug in, the same as under an Ann Arbor canopy.

  • Beds amended wide, not just the planting hole, so roots can leave the clay.
  • Crowns set slightly high so water moves away from the stem instead of pooling.
  • Local knowledge, we work Ypsilanti every week, not once a season.
  • Straight answers, including when the honest answer is do not spend the money.

How it works

Four steps, no surprises

1

We walk the property

Where water sits, where the sun actually lands, what the soil is, and what you want the space to do.

2

Design & written quote

A plant plan with real species names and a firm number, before anything goes in the ground.

3

Soil first, then plants

Beds shaped, amended and graded, then planting, then mulch. Skipping the first part is why plantings fail.

4

Walkthrough & care notes

What is planted, what it does in three years, and what each thing needs in its first season.

Honest pricing

What landscaping costs in Ypsilanti

Most residential projects around Ypsilanti run $2,500 to $12,000 depending on scope. A single front bed is far less.

Bed renovation

$1,200–3,500
one bed · strip, amend, plant, mulch

Front of house

$2,500–7,000
foundation beds, trees, edging

Full property

$8,000–25,000+
multiple beds, grading, hardscape

What moves the number: plant sizes, how much soil work and grading the site needs, whether stone or hardscape is in the plan, and equipment access. Larger stock looks finished immediately and costs more. Smaller stock catches up in about three seasons. Access is the cost driver here more than area. Where there is no vehicle route to the back, everything moves by wheelbarrow through a gate, and that is labor rather than material.

Where we work

We work Depot Town, Normal Park, College Heights and the properties out along the Huron River toward Superior Township, out of our yard on Maute Road in Grass Lake.

Answers

Landscaping in Ypsilanti, answered

Can you work on a small Ypsilanti lot with no back access?

Yes, and most of our work here is exactly that. Where there is no vehicle route we move material through the gate by barrow. It takes longer, which is reflected in the quote, but it is normal work rather than a problem.

I own rentals in Ypsilanti. Do you work with landlords?

Yes. A lot of our Ypsilanti work is investment property. We quote owners and management companies directly, invoice whoever holds the lot, and can keep several properties on the same schedule.

How much does landscaping cost in Ypsilanti?

Most residential projects run $2,500 to $12,000. A single bed renovation is usually $1,200 to $3,500. Redoing the front of a house typically lands between $2,500 and $7,000. We quote firm numbers after seeing the property.

What plants do well in Ypsilanti?

More than people expect, provided the bed drains. Serviceberry, ninebark, dogwood, switchgrass, little bluestem, coneflower and black-eyed susan all handle our clay well, with hosta and fern for the shaded areas. The species list matters less than whether the bed was built properly.

When is the best time to plant?

Spring and early fall are both good. Fall is often better for trees and shrubs because roots keep growing after the top goes dormant, giving the plant a head start before summer.

Do you do the design as well as the install?

Yes, and the same crew does both. The person who read the grade is the person who plants it, which is how a plan survives contact with the actual site.

Can you fix a bed that keeps dying?

Usually. Nine times out of ten it is water sitting in clay around the root balls, or mulch piled against the stems. Both are fixable without starting over.
