How much does a retaining wall cost in Michigan?
Most installed residential retaining walls run $30 to $70 per square foot of wall face. A short garden block wall lands around $30 to $45, a taller structural wall around $45 to $65, and natural stone or boulder walls $55 to $70 and up. Height, material, drainage needs and site access are the biggest factors. We give a firm written number after seeing the site.
How long does a retaining wall last?
A properly built segmental block or natural-stone wall with correct base prep and drainage lasts 30 years or more, and boulder walls can last a lifetime. Walls that fail early almost always skipped the drainage and base work.
Do I need a permit for a retaining wall?
In most local municipalities, walls taller than about four feet measured from the bottom of the base require a permit and an engineer’s design. Shorter garden walls usually do not. We identify this during the estimate and handle the engineering and permit coordination.
Why is my existing wall leaning or bulging?
Water. If a wall was built without a drainage layer, drain tile and clean backfill, Michigan’s freeze-thaw cycle pushes it out of line over time. We can assess whether yours can be repaired or needs rebuilding.
Can a retaining wall fix erosion or drainage problems?
Often yes, when it is designed as part of a grading and drainage plan rather than in isolation. Controlling where water goes is what stops erosion, so we frequently pair walls with French drains and grading.
